After the City of Los Angeles voted to ban oil and gas extraction, then-Mayor Eric Garcetti and the County announced the Los Angeles Just Transition Strategy. The report is part of the City of Los Angeles’s oil drilling ban.

The creation of the Just Transition Strategy was initiated in late 2021 by the Just Transition Task Force. The 25-page report was released on Saturday, December 10.

According to the report, Intelligent Partnership found there are around 664 oil and gas drilling employees in the areas where the ban will take effect. Based on a survey of 176 workers, the company estimates 128 of the 664 employees will retire or leave the County because of the Oil and Gas Drilling Ordinance.

The Just Transition Strategy includes three goals, each with multiple strategies and actions for implementation, including for the future of workers, the land, and the Strategy’s finances.

“‘The era of trading our clean air, water, and soil for fuel must end. But we don’t have to choose between our environment and good jobs–we can and will have both,” the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Janice Hahn said.
