Netflix’s ‘Against the Ropes,’ A Story About Family and Lucha Libre, Premieres on Wednesday

Netflix’s upcoming professional wrestling series “Against the Ropes” (“Contra las cuerdas” in Spanish) premieres on Wednesday. The show is set in Mexico and is originally in Spanish, but it will be available dubbed in English.
“Against the Ropes” begins streaming on Netflix on January 25, 2023.
On YouTube, Netflix Latinoamerica released an official trailer for the series on January 9. The following day, the professional wrestling-giant WWE released an additional trailer for the series. The trailer features lucha libre legend and WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio.
Mysterio tweeted out a teaser of the upcoming series a few days later. Based on the teaser, the WWE and the Mexican luchador appear to be, likely, integral to the show’s story development.
Over the last few years, Netflix has produced multiple original TV shows and movies about or related to professional wrestling.
In 2017, “GLOW,” starring Alison Brie, premiered and ran for three seasons until 2019.
The drama was followed by the “The Big Show Show,” series and “The Main Event” movie in 2020. Both Netflix originals featured multiple current and former WWE Superstars. They were produced as part of a partnership between Netflix and WWE Studios.
According to Netflix’s description of the “Against the Ropes,” it should be both a bittersweet and an exciting watch for viewers. The stories will follow Ángela, recently released from prison, and her path to becoming a better person and parent by picking a new career path: Lucha libre.
The cast of “Against the Ropes” includes Caraly Sánchez, Alisson Santiago, Cuauhtli Jiménez, Scarlet Gruber, and Carmen Ramos.
Carolina Rivera created the comedy/drama “Against the Ropes.” She is also co-creator of Netflix’s “Daughter From Another Mother” and has written dozens of episodes for the CW’s “Jane the Virgin” and Lifetime’s “Devious Maids.”
